Well, it's official! Red Comb's first flock has arrived! We now have 61 more mouths to feed in our household and boy are they hungry!
25 Black Stars 25 Red Stars 10 Americanas and 1 Mysterious Exotic Breed
The kids are beside themselves with excitement and joy. They helped me dip each tiny beak into the water upon their arrival before entering their new home. The brooder Greg made is great and looks enormous with these tiny chicks in it. But they grow so fast and before you know it we'll be scrambling for bigger housing.
Their diet consists solely of local Organic Chick Starter Mash and fresh water. We are lucky enough to have an organic feed supplier in Vermont and a wonderful local feed store who stocks their products. The quality is amazing. When I ripped open the bag it smelled delicious! I'm not kidding. Good stuff. And when good stuff goes in, delicious healthy eggs eventually come out. Of course, that's our goal and our dream and we are just one step closer each day.
In case you're wondering how chicks are shipped you recieve a box like this, small and simple but it makes a lot of noise. I could hear the chirping as Greg pulled in the driveway. So funny. We had to go down to the post office to pick them up but it seemed like everyone was excited because our postman came up the driveway anyway this afternoon to come and see them for himself.
Now in addition to our own three children who keep us up a lot at night I am sure we'll be out to check on these little ladies too. It's supposed to get fairly cold tonight here in Vermont but they have their bedding, heat lamp and each other to stay warm.
Then first thing tomorrow morning we'll all be up and out ready to hang out with them again.
